In response to a recent rally by police and firefighters outside the New Jersey State House in Trenton, Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset/Morris) renewed his push for civil service reforms that will produce the savings needed to keep those vital public servants at their jobs.

“The rally should be a wake-up call to Democrats to stop stonewalling and pass comprehensive civil service reform,” stated Bateman. “In these tough economic times, towns and cities throughout New Jersey are struggling with the inflexibility of the current civil service bureaucracy that makes it impossible to cut costs and balance budgets without laying off employees, including police and firefighters. Civil service reform is not a cure-all, but it certainly would help towns lower their costs and allow many of these men and women to continue serving their communities.”

A bill sponsored by Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset/Morris) that would allow seniors to establish his or her identity for the purpose of renewing a driver’s license by affidavit rather than by producing a birth certificate was unanimously passed by the Senate Transportation Committee today.

“When renewing their drivers license, the primary document required by the Motor Vehicle Commission places a hardship on many senior citizens who have trouble finding their birth certificates, ” Bateman stated. “This legislation gives seniors more options to verify their identity and legally renew their driver’s licenses.”

“Governor Christie has been a welcome change for New Jersey residents who suffered through the past eight years under Democrat Governors who increased spending by $11 billion, pushed through 115 tax increases and doubled state debt making New Jersey more and more unaffordable for the average family.

“By showing leadership and making the tough, but necessary decisions, Governor Christie is positioning New Jersey to make a solid recovery for when the economy improves.

A bill sponsored by Senators Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset/Morris) and Joseph Pennacchio (R-Morris/Passaic) that prohibits payment of temporary disability benefits to incarcerated individuals passed the Senate today.

“If you break the law and are serving time in prison, you shouldn’t receive a disability check, ” Bateman stated. “You are already being fed, clothed and sheltered at the taxpayers’ expense. The limited money in disability funds should be reserved for hard working, law abiding citizens who need that money to survive.”

Senator Kip Bateman (R-16), the sponsor of legislation that would enact comprehensive reform to the state’s civil service laws, praised Governor Chris Christie for signing a conditional veto of weak civil service legislation sponsored by Democrats that the Governor called, “tepid, ineffective and meaningless change.”

In response to the conditional veto of A-3590, Senator Bateman issued the following statement:

Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R- Somerset/Morris) issued the following statement supporting Governor Christie’s veto of new affordable housing legislation:

“As the original sponsor of legislation to end the failed Council on Affordable Housing, I was appalled the Legislature approved a new affordable housing boondoggle even worse than the current system.

“The Governor’s conditional veto and proposed remedies stand firmly on the side of the hundreds of municipalities that would be massively burdened by the amended version of S-1 that was passed by the Legislature.
