Legislation submitted Thursday by Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman, R-Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Somerset, would end the practice of union officials being paid tens of millions of tax dollars for non-public work.

Senator Bateman’s bill implements recommendations urged by this month’s State Commission of Investigation report that detailed $30 million in tax dollars in a five-year period were wasted on salaries, medical benefits, transportation and equipment for public-sector labor representatives on paid release to conduct union business.

“This SCI report exposed a sickening and abusive practice that needs to end immediately,” Bateman said. “Government must ensure taxpayers are receiving public services and benefits in return for their tax dollars.”

“New Jersey voters passed budgets in a record 90 percent of school districts including Princeton, Montgomery and Hillsborough, thanks to our bipartisan accomplishment of a 2-percent levy cap and the hard work of school district leaders to create responsible budgets,” Bateman said. “This is a sign that voters must be happy with how property tax growth has slowed with landmark reforms under Governor Christie.”
