Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset/Morris) issued the flowing statement today after Governor Chris Christie’s State Budget Address:

“Governor Christie has been a welcome change for New Jersey residents who suffered through the past eight years under Democrat Governors who increased spending by $11 billion, pushed through 115 tax increases and doubled state debt making New Jersey more and more unaffordable for the average family.

“By showing leadership and making the tough, but necessary decisions, Governor Christie is positioning New Jersey to make a solid recovery for when the economy improves.

A bill sponsored by Senators Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R-Somerset/Morris) and Joseph Pennacchio (R-Morris/Passaic) that prohibits payment of temporary disability benefits to incarcerated individuals passed the Senate today.

“If you break the law and are serving time in prison, you shouldn’t receive a disability check, ” Bateman stated. “You are already being fed, clothed and sheltered at the taxpayers’ expense. The limited money in disability funds should be reserved for hard working, law abiding citizens who need that money to survive.”

Senator Kip Bateman (R-16), the sponsor of legislation that would enact comprehensive reform to the state’s civil service laws, praised Governor Chris Christie for signing a conditional veto of weak civil service legislation sponsored by Democrats that the Governor called, “tepid, ineffective and meaningless change.”

In response to the conditional veto of A-3590, Senator Bateman issued the following statement:

“After working with Republicans to enact a two-percent property tax cap last year, it is disappointing that Democrats have repeatedly blocked legislation, including comprehensive civil service reform, which is needed to make the cap work.

Senator Christopher “Kip” Bateman (R- Somerset/Morris) issued the following statement supporting Governor Christie’s veto of new affordable housing legislation:

“As the original sponsor of legislation to end the failed Council on Affordable Housing, I was appalled the Legislature approved a new affordable housing boondoggle even worse than the current system.

“The Governor’s conditional veto and proposed remedies stand firmly on the side of the hundreds of municipalities that would be massively burdened by the amended version of S-1 that was passed by the Legislature.

“Civil service is a relic of an era that did not offer workers the protections they now enjoy under state and federal labor laws, ” Bateman stated. “It is time to give local governments a choice as to whether or not they continue to participate in a system that in many cases drives up personnel costs and property taxes.”

“Ron Gravino is an exceptionally qualified nominee for the Turnpike Authority who possesses both the experience in transportation policy and strong moral character the agency needs. He previously served for six years on the New Jersey Highway Authority, the Turnpike Authority’s predecessor. His nomination should pass the Senate overwhelmingly if our Democrat colleagues consider merit and merit alone.
